20 Things I Know About My Abah

Today, 24 AUGUST 2007 is my daddy's birthday.. MR. ABDUL JALIL BIN DARUS.

He has turned 52..but he looks like 42..eheh..

Here are 20 Things I Know About My Dad (in no particular order) ... more
here

1. He's a neat freak.. no, superfreak (I think it's an obsessive compulsive disorder)

2. His friends call him Jack...since loooong time ago and until now he's still known as Jack (he wants his grandchildren to call him Tok Jack, one day..hahaha)
How that name came about, I don't know..

3. He loves to eat and he knows all the great makan places...yeaahhh..

4. He is so fair (as in adil) and also fair-skinned. Now I know where I got my 'putih-ness'. According to Mama, Abah is the true "mamak air-con"...(mamak putih la.. hahaha..) but he became tanned due to all the outdoor activities. Yeah, he's a boy..what do you expect?

5. He LOOKS veryyyyy garang and sombong, tapi sebenarnya orangnya sangat baik hati. (Only those who are really close and know him well will know how kind and soft-hearted he is)

6. He is a movie buff. Oh, and he enjoys the law/crime TV series too.

7. He loves my Mama very very much. Like, times infinity.

8. His children mean the world to him.

9. He is absolutely GENEROUS and has a BIG heart.

10. He is a superduper athlete and a health freak. He used to play all kinds of sports in his younger days..turned out to be an awesome rugby player (he played for Penang and later for Police). Now he plays golf. Oh, and he totally has to go for his morning/evening jog every single day or else he'll become jittery and restless.

11. He likes to provoke and tease and be sarcastic, especially with me (or it because I am daddy's one and only girl, therefore I am forever sensitive?)

12. He is a good singer, but he likes to close his eyes when he sings (especially kalau karaoke. camner nak tgk lyrics nye bah?)

13. When he was 19, his cat died. (I think he had the cat since he was 11 kot). He cried buckets. That's why we cannot bela kucing.

14. He is rajin, detailed and committed. According to his good friend, Mr. Ooi (who was my client during the KL Convention Centre event),"Sheemi is detailed and committed and I can see where she got that genes from." Woohoooo... (haha..Abah mesti kata Mi perasan)

15. He is darn funny. As in a real joker who cracks people up. And funny gila-gila. He's like, Jim Carrey!

16. He can't go to the zoo sebab kesian tengok the animals in captivity.

17. He is a pessimist (as opposed to Mama, who is the eternal optimist)

18. Many years ago, he told me that I can't get married and I have to stay with him and take care of him..(Hahahaa..Abah ni kelakar la...)

19. He is very punctual. Time and discipline are his fields of expertise.
But Mama and I are the culprits who are always late in getting ready, hence no matter how early he is, Abah always has to wait for us. (Sorry Abah..hehe)

20. He is my hero because, since I was small until now and forever, I always know that he is SuperDad. He makes my Mama and my brothers and I feel safe and comfortable and we know we can always count on him.And this I know for sure.. he can and he will, do anything within his power, to makes us happy.

Abah, we may have let you down numerous times. But you never did.

Not even once.

We can never repay all the things that you have done for us..but we're extremely grateful and proud that you're our Abah and we're your children. .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABAH...WE LOVE YOU!

i watch and i write

I'm addicted.. to the television!! Aarghhh.. ever since being temporary jobless ni, I find myself glued to the couch.. and I am addicted to none other than E! Entertainment Network, channel 76 on astro..sighh...I totally need my daily dosage of E..

Day by day, I feel like I'm a part of the Hollywood who's who.. (haha i wish..)
I guess it's just part of my highly curious nature, hence the insatiable thirst to know what's going on in other people's lives.. (that's just one of the segments on E!..the daily juicy goss..)
Anyway, I'm kinda enjoying the THS (True Hollywood Stories) segment, where it's some sort of a biography on the stars and any other newsworthy personalities..

(come to think of it, I have been enjoying biographies ever since I could read. maybe it's just that thingy of wanting to get into a another person's mind, i suppose. or maybe i'm just plain busybody..hehe!)

Luckily, while I was flipping channels, I stumbled upon a gem of a biography..the story of the late Sudirman..on Anak Gemilang - rtm 1. Call me a softie but I just couldn't stop the tears..Sudirman was, and still is the best..no one can ever replace him.. not only was he talented, but his work ethics were amazing. (my ex-boss was Sudirman's former manager, and that's what he said about him too.)

I grew up watching Sudir perform and listening to his music..I was not his biggest fan, but he had such a dazzling effect on people..on Malaysians. Not only the Malays knew him, but back in that era, even the Chinese and Indians and other races knew who Sudirman was. I guess that's why he's known as the People's Singer, among the other titles accorded to him. (His sister's house was next to my kindergarten in Bangsar, and I always longed to sneak a peek but never got lucky..)

I also learned more about the Chow Kit Road concert, (Malaysia's one and only attempt) while watching this Anak Gemilang program. Jenny Chin, his musician was interviewed and she related the concert experience as, "A feeling of high. You can't see where the flow of people ended..it was like, endless. We didn't want to stop playing, Sudirman didn't want to stop singing." She added that during the 80s, concerts or shows were done in hotels, and for Sudirman to come up with an idea for an open air concert in Chow Kit Road was just simply unbelievable. But he made it happen, as always. Apparently 100,000 people thronged Chow Kit that Monday night. To quote local newspaper The Star,"KL came to a standstill and it had nothing to do with the recession but with one man, Malaysia's top entertainer, an electrifying performance and most memorable night".

Sudir's demise was a great loss to the nation..and the cause of his death became widely speculated, by the public and the media. I remember, at 12 years old, being shushed by the grown-ups when I asked, "Why did Sudirman die, what was his sickness? He couldn't have just keeled over and die, could he?" But no one gave me a satisfactory answer. Even my ex-boss who knew Sudir so well, steered away from the topic when I posed the question to him..

I shall not elaborate more..for I am not writing a biography on Sudirman. I am merely relating some of the insights I've gained and the profound emotion that I felt while watching the program..

And no matter how many THS I watch on E!, I don't think any can top this TMS (True Malaysian Stories) on Sudirman.. which left me in tears (and goosebumps)

saya masuk hospital

Today I went for a medical checkup in Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre..
It's been such a long time since i've gone for a checkup..berdebar-debar pulak.. but everything went ok.. the waiting part was such a pain though..tu lah akibatnya bila tak buat appointment dulu..
I guess it's the same anywhere..tunggu tunggu dan tunggu..tapi best sebab boleh tengok macam-macam orang..

During the total of 3 hours warming my butt (on a plush comfy seat, nonetheless), expatriates, among others, walked in to get medical attention.. Mat Sallehs, Arabs, Indons.. there was this Arab guy who's not so fluent in English.. so an Arabic interpreter came to the rescue.. I heard that the hospital also has a Japanese liaison manager..huhuhu.. suddenly I wish that I hadn't quit Japanese language lessons back when I was in Standard 5 dulu.. kalau tak sekarang dah boleh jadi interpreter dah..

And so I went in to get my blood pressure checked, my eyesight, chest x-ray.. the works.. the nurses are smiley and friendly (i just love nurses yang very motherly type..makes me less takut..)

Ok, the cat's out of the bag... yes, I am afraid of doctors and hospitals. And yet I love to watch Doogie Howser M.D., Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy, E.R., House dan seangkatan dengannya.

(and to think that i applied for a job in a hospital..oh well, tapi marketing communication department.. takpe..)

Anyway, masa kat the X-Ray department, I saw ramaiiiii young, not-so-bad-looking (ahem) guys in white lab coats.. So it made me wonder, are they doctors? Or are they lab technicians, radiologists or something like that?

Hehe.. paging for Dr. McDreamy...

(yayang.. if you're reading..I'M JUST KIDDING!! hahahaha...)

Gleneagles Intan is such a posh place.. it's the only hospital that has those, you know, doormen in fancy red coats to open the door of your car and greet you..macam kat hotel..
and they have DOME cafe ok.. (I will need to refrain myself from indulging in yummy ice coffee with ice cream or gourmet pie or caesar's salad..ooooh...yums)

Yea..well the big news is.. I got the job..found out about it yesterday.. (hence the medical checkup today la..)
Apparently I aced the first interview and didn't have to go for a second one..which by right anyone who goes for a job interview in Gleneagles Intan patut ada another round of interview with the CEO. I know, unfair, YAY ME! (can't stop smiling!)

But what caught me by surprise was the salary.. totally unexpected.. (trying very hard to not smile in fear of doing more damage to my cheeks)

All I can say is, syukur ALHAMDULILLAH.. rezeki nak kahwin kot.. heheh..

And so I shall wait til September..

50 years of Merdeka.. syukur Alhamdulillah.. i am grateful to be a Malaysian..

now if only we can change some of that 'MALAY'sian mentality..
