fasting in the heart & mind

Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, is two weeks in, and two weeks away from its end. Around the world, nearly a billion healthy Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn till dusk, for one month. But where is the virtue in going without food and drink? And what is the great lesson that Muslims are supposed to learn from all this? ANIZA DAMIS finds out.

A MOTHER is slaving over the kitchen stove, trying to prepare a delicious meal for her family. A businessman is bent over his desk, studying hard for an examination on marketing strategies to improve his business. An engineer is going over the details of a construction thoroughly, making sure that the building will be strong and safe. A doctor is going over a patient's symptoms once again, trying to identify the illness to cure the patient.

What do these people have in common? They are all abstaining from food and drink during Ramadan, and trying to be good Muslims.

All are fulfilling a religious virtue: Of being very human, yet trying to be the best that a human can be.

This is what the end product of the fasting month should be.
Contrary to popular misunderstanding, the purpose of fasting is not just to appreciate what life must be like for poor people who cannot afford food. Rather, it is about man ruling over his base desires, instead of being ruled by them, says Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim) deputy director-general Nik Mustapha Nik Hassan.

"There are two faculties that exist within the nature of man which do not change: the angelic faculty and the bestial faculty. The bestial part is lust -- for food, drink, material possessions, sex.

"Fasting is spiritual training to strengthen the angelic part of man."

But being "angelic" doesn't mean that a person shouldn't enjoy life, Nik Mustapha says, as Islam is very much about living in this world. So, for instance, after the breaking of fast at the end of the day, a person is allowed to eat, drink, and engage in sexual congress with his or her spouse.

"The belief that the fasting month is about suppressing the desires is wrong. Fasting teaches you to discipline -- not suppress -- your desires.

"Desire is a very human thing. And it never goes away. But it is not supposed to direct how you live your life." Fasting, Nik Mustapha stresses, goes beyond not taking food and drink.

"You have to minimise the eyes, mouth, ears, etc, from all evil things.

"As recounted by Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad said, 'God has no need for man to go without food and drink, who cannot shun evil and falsehood even during a fast'."

For Muslims, all activities, even the mundane ones, should be guided by the ethics and morality of Islam.

But to achieve this moral and ethical part, a person cannot do it unless he or she has a close relationship with God, Nik Mustapha says.

"You can talk about integrity, legal procedure, anti-corruption, etc; but if you do not have a close relationship with God, it's an impossible task.

"Even when working, in whatever capacity, one does it to satisfy God. And to satisfy God means to achieve excellence."

Another saying of the prophet, as narrated by Al-Baihaqi, illustrates this point: "Indeed, Allah loves that when you do a job, you do it perfectly."

Thus, in doing business, for instance, a businessman should aim to make a profit by embarking on efficiency and productivity, including pursuing education that contributes to making the person understand business opportunities.

But the businessman must also subscribe to ethical practices. He should not manipulate or exploit others.

"So, it's very wrong to be fasting and at the same time be very corrupt. But if people fast with the understanding that they are supposed to improve their discipline, then hopefully they will minimise their doing of bad deeds."

And, although this doesn't mean that a person will be successful in avoiding all bad things, learning to minimise irreligious activities is a very important practice. It is because of this that the fasting month is repeated every year because man, by nature, is forgetful, says Nik Mustapha.

But beyond the individual, fasting, if observed correctly, is also good for the economy.

Although some man hours is affected by Ramadan, Nik Mustapha says this is made up for by the discipline employees acquire during this month.

"You don't measure productivity over a month; you measure it over a year.

"So, when you measure it in a year, the discipline that employees acquired during Ramadan -- honesty, industry, mutual help and assistance -- should also extend to the other months.

"Productivity is not measured by how many hours you put in, but by how much you produce."

It is in the fasting month that people should take the opportunity to improve their understanding of work and discipline, and try to achieve excellence.

"Whether it is to your family, neighbours or colleagues -- be they Muslims or non-Muslims -- as well as the animals and the environment, you must give serious thought to your contributions.

"You should ask yourself: "Am I serious in whatever profession I'm in?' "

And since the Quran is the guide for Muslims, they should not only recite the Quran but should strive to read it, contemplate on it, and understand it.

"If a person chooses to concentrate on only one chapter from the Quran for this month and tries to thoroughly understand what it means and how it applies to his or her life, that's good enough.

"The Quran should be the guidance: How should I embark on this business (called life)?"

wellllll..... the tuichis are married!

hehehee… 11 April 2008 marked a significant milestone in my life..

sheemi is now mrs. mohd hafidz..

i’ve dreamt of being a wife since i was a little girl… and oh.. only God knows how extremely happy I am that my wish came true… and not simply married to any guy on the street okayyyy, but to the man of my dreams..my soulmate…

never thought i'd find him.. but i did.. so girls, don't stop believing!

prince charming.. fairytale ending.. happy-ever-after.. they do exist!!

and as icing on the cake, i managed to have a wedding of my dreams too :)

a lot of the guests, especially my parents' friends, were overwhelmed and very impressed with the wedding. some said it was "unforgettable", "breathtaking", and most importantly, they thought that the bride and groom are a match made in heaven, the sweetest and most fun couple they've ever seen, very very made for each other..

we think so too! hehehee...

anyway, a good friend of mine back in high school, Puteri, wrote an entry about the wedding. Thanks Puteri :)

budaya keje.. owwhhhh..

i remember about 2 months ago..
a head of a department expressed his..umm..opinion..at our new employee orientation program at work.

in a nutshell, he thinks people from non-clinical departments (Marketing, Corporate Comm, etc) are not important. (by the way, i work in a hospital)
yeah, true enough, compared to the docs and nurses la. but it could have been said in a more appropriate way, couldn't it?
he even said that what we do is not rocket science (implying that any moron can do what i do ke?)

what a way to make new people feel welcome, especially coming from the HEAD OF HR!!

i feel like i'm working with a bunch of... ummm.. errr... aaaa...

sighh... sampai tak boleh nak describe!

most of them are still in the old school mentality..and things move at a slow pace.. and everyone works like robots..clock in at 9, pukul 4.30 dah standby to go home.. and buat keje semata-mata for the sake of buat keje.. not much thought put into it..

nevertheless, i'm trying to adapt to the corporate culture of suck-ups, internal politics, gossip mongers, people who give you 'the look' just because you're very trendy & fashionable...

but..

i guess it's not challenging enough for me kot? (even when things get damn busy + hectic)

it's just work. not pushing my limits, not challenging my intellectual prowess, not fully utilizing my skills and talents.

what a waste.

(i probably won't last even an hour in government sector..haiihhh)

voice inside my head #1: hey, as long as it pays the bills, who's complaining? be grateful sheemi..

I AM! I AM! grrr...

i loved my outfit (designed by my lovely Mama) & my rings & the hantarans that i received..

the birthday of me

honestly, didn't give it much thought pun.. no party or gathering or anything... mr. tuichi and i even made a deal to not give each other presents (his birthday is 1 week after mine)... my Abah said his present to me is on the 27th of october..hehehe...

like, people always say, a year older, a year wiser.. but i feel i've become so much wiser within just a year.. feels great to have actually accomplished quite a number of things since my last birthday..

i don't really feel like i'm 27.. i'm quite surprised that at times i even forget my own age..and i'm relieved that i don't have that "oh-help-my-biological-clock-is-ticking" syndrome.. age is just a number la.. you choose how you want to live your life..

plus, thank goodness i don't look a day older..heh heh heh.. (perasan!)

now, let's get the birthday business out of the way... beads of sweat have formed on my forehead... brows furrowing.. pulse racing... heart beating furiously..anxiety is starting to set in...

have you ever wondered..

sometimes life works in mysterious ways.. some people have it so easy, and yet some have to struggle so hard..

I know of a person..a really great guy.. funny, charming, intelligent, hardworking, reliable, independent, book smart & street smart ..all the qualities that I like la kan..

iklan jap: most people that I know yang book smart (as in bijak pandai dalam theory/academic – good in maths, kaki score etc) are not street smart (contohnya macam tukar tayar kereta, cat dinding, pandai cari duit, as in excellent business sense)

Ada pulak yang street smart tapi tak book smart. Ada juga yang kedua-duanya fail..lagi kesian.
To be able to be both book smart and street smart is, AMAZING.

(oh..looks like I have to make another entry solely on that..no offence to anyone..
sesiapa terasa..too bad for u! alaaa, no one reads my blog pun...hahahaha)

anyway sambung balik cerita…about this guy I know..I’ve never heard him complain. Orang suruh dia buat apa2 pun, he will do..beli makanan, potong rumput, basuh kereta, lukis floor plan layout, shop for groceries, jadi emcee, buat senamrobik in front a lot of people, buat ni, buat tu.. tapi dia sekali pun tak pernah mengeluh, tak pernah say no. I guess that’s why wherever he works or wherever he goes, he has such a powerful impact, he touches the hearts of those around him. Semua orang sayang dia.

Especially masa dia buat MLM (multi level marketing)..adalah this company..it’s reaaally good..the system, the people.. (X0…G!!!!)

iklan lagi: it really pisses me off when people say MLM ni skim la, direct selling la..takkan berjaya la..
it also makes me laugh out loud.. please don’t judge if you don’t know what you’re talking about..
wei buat dulu la baru tau..just because you tried and failed in one company, doesn’t mean it’s the same everywhere. different companies, different bonus system, different work culture..if you dah buat sehabis baik and ikut system tapi tak berjaya gak, then only you can say “it’s not meant to be”

ok sambung.. so I knew this guy when he was doing the MLM business.. and I was (and still am) in total awe of him..(dahla he’s 4 years younger than me)..hahaha..


but when we were first introduced, I thought he was 25, 26.


He thought I was 19 (blush blush).


His brother was also there.. I thought he was the abang (sebab dia ni kan..gaya so abang2 you know..dia macam ada aura yang protective).. so rupanya yang dengan dia tu abangnye, si dia ni adalah adik.. tapi dua2 suara bass.. Barry White katanya..


both of them memang kelakar..and that’s how we met..


He was astoundingly matured for his age (masa tu dia 21).. and everyone looked up to him..and admired him so much..


The way he gave his presentation, the way he motivates, membakar semangat, a great listener, baik hati, sanggup buat apa saja for his uplines, downlines and sidelines..
Ke mana saja dia pergi, his wide grin, his infectious smile and his big booming laughter sure can brighten up someone’s day..

Ni pula antara comment2 yang orang cakap pasal dia. Please note that these are comments from people who are very experienced, in MLM and also in life..veteran katanya.

I know all this sebab saya ni agak busybody hahaha.. telinga mass comm, i would say. mungkin juga saya berpeluang lepak with all the otai2.

But most importantly because I LIKE HIM, that’s why I’m always alert when his name was mentioned :)

Berikut adalah petikan komen2:

Crown Manager Aseng: budak ni boleh pergi jauh.. he’s gonna be a success story satu hari nanti.. aku tak heran kalau dia boleh berjaya lagi cepat drp aku (Aseng took 4 years in this MLM company to work his way up and earn RM70k a month)


Crown Manager Tambun: dia ni born leader.. potential sangat tinggi.. pegang dia, dia sangat influential..he is an asset (memesan kepada upline si dia ni, iaitu DM Mr. K)

Crown Manager Kak Ida & Kak Ita: kalau mintak tolong, dia mesti tolong..dia ni je lah yang aku boleh harap..he gives more than 100%.. paling bersemangat, paling best, gilo macam kitorang gak..a fine young man..siapa kahwin dgn dia memang sangat bertuah!

Diamond Manager Apai: bagus la dia ni..tak pernah tengok dia masam atau kusut atau stress..ceria je.. beb, apa rahsia ko?

and many more..oh man terlalu banyak sebenarnya.. I can write a whole book on the many good things said about this guy… unbelievable..

Even sekarang ni kat tempat keje dia pun, semua orang sayang dia..the seniors puji dia, the sifus also puji and sayang dia..and he’s only been there for less than 3 months.

if he doesn’t continue kat situ after September.. mesti tempat tu sunyi.. pastu mesti sale kurang rancak..

iklan lagi: can u imagine? this guy actually learned about footwear technology and design about 9 months ago.. he had no prior training in footwear, only in graphic..so memang start from zero la..
TETAPI!
his designs sold like hot cakes when the company had an exhibition at the Garda Shoe Fair in Italy, last month..

ITALY ok! ITALY!!


NOW, the best part is that he doesn’t blow his own horn. dia ni..omigoodness terlalu humble and tak suka la nak bangga2 diri ni. he’s not an attention seeker. maybe to only exclusive people je kot.. (ahem)

But..apa yang kebanyakan orang tak tau..(well, actually no one knows but me) is that deep down inside..he cries silently..

Dia sentiasa bersabar..sebab dia jenis tak suka bersuara..dia suka cakap, “biar orang buat kita..kita jangan buat kat orang.”

He’s a people pleaser.. he likes to make people happy..he is happy when others are happy. He doesn’t like to create tensions and he doesn’t want to sakitkan hati orang lain.. walaupun sebenarnya dia sedih atau sakit hati.. kadang2 he goes out of the way to make people happy sampai menyusahkan diri and sacrificing his own happiness..

Yang hebatnya this guy adalah kerana dia selalu berjaya meng‘cover’ perasaan, dia takkan tunjuk dia pissed off or bengang. or marah. tapi sebenarnya dia adalah seorang yang sangat baran..straight palm some more.. (but the writer has yet to see its full wrath..huhuhu)
people think he’s ok with it..coz he won’t say no..and he’ll smile and say “takpe, tak kisah” or “I’m ok..really, I am”

So orang pun pijak2 dia..or people take him for granted..or people don’t appreciate him..or people just don’t care at all about his feelings..
tapi biasalah..manusia ni kadang2 lupa..pastu jadi selfish..and hanya memikirkan diri sendiri..without considering about others..


Sometimes I just get flabbergasted because this guy is such a nice guy.. lain la kalau dia seorang yang kenjis sawari or dia memang jenis busuk hati or selfish gak..
but he’s a humble, amazing, wonderful guy.. he really is..
Dia terlalu humble sampai orang tak nampak.. mungkin people do appreciate and recognize, but people are too busy paying attention to other people or things and probably he’s brushed aside, not getting the attention that he truly deserves? I wonder..

so..betul ke the saying, ‘nice guys finish last’?
that’s sad. that's not right. it shouldn't be that way.


to the ‘guy’.. I wrote this to remind you of what you’re worth..

Every issue must have a solution, and when we solve an issue, we learn from the mistake and menjadi lebih bijak dan matang.

In life, we need obstacles kan? That’s what makes us become stronger characters.

Sebab tu some have it easy and some have to struggle..setiap individu ada cara yang tersendiri untuk belajar menempuhi kehidupan ini, and setiap daripada kita akan ada plot and ending tersendiri also (cewah..)

Contoh: Ada orang senang2 je parents bagi kereta untuk pakai gi keje.. ada orang kena pegi keje naik putra LRT pastu tukar naik star LRT kat masjid jamek pastu tunggu bas pastu jalan kaki lagi.. (ni CONTOH je la)

But, I feel orang yang naik putra-star-jalan kaki tu lebih bahagia kot hidup dia.. coz pagi2 dia dah byk berjalan, that's exercise, dia boleh jumpa all kinds of people and tak stress stuck in a jam like people who drive..yang sakit kaki, kaki kejung, duduk lama2, pastu kena isi minyak and bayar installment kereta every month and service kereta lagi and if the car rosak kena spend duit lagi..

Plus, wouldn’t it be a great story to tell when you become a millionaire before you turn 30? The ‘journey’…hahaha..

but seriously, success is a journey, not a destination..


I believe that there are bigger plans for you.
